Redstone, Colorado | Penny Hot Springs, Free Boondocking, Mountain Views, Hiking & Small-Town Adventures

Hello everyone! We were in Redstone, Colorado for 18 days, and it is one of our favorite spots. It is right next to the most amazing free natural hot springs that sit along a river. We have been to these hot springs before and completely fell in love with them, so now we are back again after a whole year. Our spot was really nice and only about a 10 minute drive to the hot springs. It was up in the mountains next to a little stream and close to a hike.

The first day we arrived, we set up camp and then started making dinner along with an apple pie. Apple pie has become a tradition for us ever since we met the Penny Hot Springs inspector, also known as David. He is an amazing elderly man who travels in his van and stays at Penny Hot Springs for a couple of months each year, making sure everyone is having fun. When we first met him, he bought apple pie for us to share at the springs, so we thought it would be a great idea to keep the tradition alive and make him a homemade apple pie to share. After dinner and baking the pie, we packed our towels and drove over to the hot springs. We hung out, chatted with David and some locals we met last year, and stayed until it got dark before heading home to get some rest.

The following day, after I got up and finished school and chores, we drove up to the campsite we stayed at last year and checked out all the spots. After that, we drove to the top of the mountain to enjoy the scenic views, take photos, and have lunch. Once we drove back down, we went into town for groceries, then stopped at a natural spring to collect good drinking water. After dinner, we headed back to the hot springs and spent a couple of hours there before returning to the trailer to get some sleep.

The next day, I got up early and made a happy anniversary card for my parents. I also cleaned up the house a bit before they woke up. Once they were up, they read their card while drinking coffee. After getting ready for the day, they went into town to explore the shops. They ended up stopping at a cute art and coffee place where they painted, played card games, and enjoyed the mountain views and each other’s company. While they were out, Landon and I watched movies, played card and board games, and called family and friends. After a few hours, my parents came back, changed into their bathing suits, packed bags, and headed to Penny Hot Springs. They stayed until about 8:30 pm before a storm rolled in. They came back afterward, and overall they had an amazing anniversary.

Over the next two days, we spent time hanging out at the hot springs and chatting with friends we met there. They ended up inviting us to a potluck the following day.

The next morning, we relaxed at the trailer, then went into town to grab ingredients before heading back to make food for the potluck. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we found out it was canceled due to rain. Instead, we stopped back at the store to get some apple cider, then returned to the trailer to play card and board games and wind down for the night.

For the next three days, we stayed around the trailer during the day doing work, school, chores, cleaning, content creation, photography, videography, and playing card and board games. We also went for walks and bike rides, then finished each night at the hot springs with friends.

Over the following two days, we went to the hot springs earlier to spend more time with the locals. One of those days, we met another traveler named Cayden. We hung out with him, and he helped us draw a huge mural on the rocks using mud, don’t worry lol. After it got dark, I read for a little while, then we headed out after spending a couple of hours hanging out and chatting with everyone.

The next day was mostly errands. We drove around to get groceries, water, dump our trash, and do laundry. Afterward, we headed back to the trailer, put everything away, cleaned the house, and watched a movie.

The following day, we got everything packed up and visited the hot springs one last time before heading out the next morning.

We had an amazing time once again at Penny Hot Springs, seeing friends and getting to soak in such an incredible place. I definitely recommend checking this spot out someday, as it is one of our favorite places we have ever been to.
