Medora, North Dakota | Boondocking, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Bison, Hiking, and Beautiful Sunsets

Hello everyone! We were in Medora, North Dakota, at a nice boondocking spot for a week. Sadly, it didn’t have any amenities, but it did have tons of space for lots of trailers, open spots for solar, great sunset views, and it’s super close to Theodore Roosevelt National Park!

When we arrived, it was already sunset, so we set up camp quickly, made some dinner, and called it a night to get some rest after our long, tiring drive.

The following day, we packed up some lunch and drove over to Theodore Roosevelt NP. When we got there, we spotted a little historical walk and checked it out, reading all the signs so we could learn about the place! After our little walk, we went into the visitor center to get our Junior Ranger packets and read more signs about Theodore Roosevelt NP. Our next stop was a 14-mile hike that we only did a couple of miles of before heading back to the car. That hike was one you would camp at the end of, but we just wanted to hike some of it for the scenery. And the scenery it had! We got to see bison, lizards, a whole town of prairie dogs, and a couple of other little critters. After the hike, we headed back to the RV but stopped by a gas station/grocery store on the way back to pick up some food. Once we got to the trailer, we ate dinner, watched the sunset, and played some outdoor games before calling it a night.

The following day, we went into the NP again, but this time we didn’t do any hikes. We just checked out Theodore Roosevelt’s house and turned in me and Landon’s Junior Ranger packets. After we got our Junior Ranger badges, we went over to the little town next to the park. We walked around and checked out all the little shops and stores. They even had a fake shooting saloon game, so of course, we had to try it! We ended up spending more money than we anticipated because it was so much fun! After walking around town, we went to see some live music. The musicians asked for song requests, so of course, we had to ask for “On the Road Again”! While we were listening to the music, we went across the street and got some yummy ice cream. We spent about an hour or two listening to music before heading back to the trailer for dinner and some rest.

The next day, we packed up some lunches and dinner and went into the NP again. Our first stop was the visitor center to get some good hike recommendations. Our first hike was only about 3 miles round trip, and it was super fun. We got to see two bison, a couple of prairie dog towns, and amazing views of the desert lands! The second hike wasn’t long at all—I actually consider it more of a walk up the mountain. Once we got to the top, we ate our lunch and hung out for a little while, just chitchatting and enjoying the views. After about an hour or two, we walked back down the mountain and drove about twenty minutes over to the next hike where we planned to watch the sunset and eat dinner. And that’s exactly what we did! It was beautiful. After we spent an hour or two hanging out and enjoying nature, we drove back home and got some much-needed rest after days of hiking.

The following day, we were still tired from all the long hikes we had done throughout the week, so we just did a couple of roadside walks in the national park and read all the signs. We also got to see wild horses, a ton of buffalo, and, of course, more prairie dog towns. After a short day in the NP, we went back home and played a ton of outdoor and card games together before going for a little sunset walk.

The next day, we just hung out at camp—cleaning, doing blogs, content creation, playing a ton of card games, board games and outdoor games, going for family walks, packing up for our drive day, and more!

The next morning, we packed up the rest of our stuff and left. We had such a great time at this spot and learned so many different things at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It was amazing seeing all the beautiful views, wildlife, and nature in general. I hope you enjoyed this blog post! Be sure to keep an eye out for my next one.
